Project Overview :

FairServe is an innovative digital platform developed to address the complexities of the eviction process for private landlords in England, UK.

The platform’s primary mission is to provide a streamlined, legally compliant, and ethically responsible solution for issuing eviction notices.

By combining intuitive design with up-to-date legal standards, FairServe aims to balance the rights and responsibilities of landlords and tenants, fostering a fairer and more transparent rental market.

My Role :

As the Lead UX/Product Designer for FairServe, I was responsible for steering the design and development of the platform from concept to completion.

My role required a deep understanding of both user experience principles and the legal intricacies involved in the eviction process.

By leveraging my expertise, I aimed to create a solution that not only met the functional requirements of landlords but also upheld fairness and compliance with legal standards.

Purpose & Intent :

The primary purpose of FairServe is to facilitate the issuance of eviction notices in a manner that is both efficient and ethically responsible. This tool is designed with several key objectives in mind:

Legal Compliance

FairServe ensures that all eviction notices are generated in full compliance with current UK legislation. By integrating up-to-date legal guidelines, the platform helps landlords avoid common pitfalls that can lead to costly legal disputes.

User-Friendly Interface

With an intuitive, user-centric design, FairServe simplifies the eviction process, making it accessible even to landlords with limited legal knowledge. Step-by-step guidance and clear instructions help users navigate the complexities of issuing an eviction notice.

Ethical Consideration

FairServe is committed to promoting fairness. The platform includes features that encourage landlords to explore alternative solutions before proceeding with eviction, such as mediation or payment plans. This approach not only benefits tenants but also fosters better landlord-tenant relationships.

Efficiency and Transparency

By automating much of the administrative burden, FairServe speeds up the eviction process, saving landlords time and reducing stress. Additionally, the platform provides transparency through detailed records and documentation, ensuring that every step is well-documented and traceable.

Support and Resources

FairServe offers a wealth of resources, including legal advice and best practice guides, to help landlords understand their responsibilities and rights. This support extends to providing templates and automated forms that are legally sound and professionally formatted.

Understanding the User

User Research Summary

To ensure FairServe meets the needs of private landlords and tenants, I conducted comprehensive user research focused on key stakeholders in the eviction process. This included one-on-one interviews with landlords and tenants, providing qualitative insights into their experiences and challenges, such as legal complexities and ethical concerns.

I complemented this with online surveys distributed to a broader community of landlords and tenants, collecting quantitative data on user preferences and pain points. This combination of qualitative and quantitative research helped identify common themes and validate our findings.

Based on these insights, I developed a user persona, Alex Taylor, representing the primary user group and their goals, motivations, and behaviours. Additionally, I created a user journey map to visualise the eviction process, highlighting key touchpoints and potential pain points.

A competitive analysis was also conducted to understand market standards and identify opportunities for differentiation. This research phase was crucial in shaping FairServe, ensuring it is user-centric, legally compliant, and promotes fairness in the eviction process.

USER journey

I developed a User Journey for FairServe to ensure the platform meets the needs of its users effectively and efficiently. By mapping out the steps and interactions users take from start to finish, I identified key touchpoints and pain points in the eviction process. This comprehensive understanding will allow for the design of an intuitive and legally compliant interface that simplifies issuing eviction notices. See below for detail :

Next steps…

As I continue to develop this design, I will be creating wire-framed low fidelity prototypes in readiness for the first round of user testing.
